Kids on Gallaghers Child Care Centre - Kinder

The Kinder room program is run by our kindergarten teacher and two assistants. Our program runs all day from Monday to Friday, and covers 3 and 4 year old kindergarten.

To be eligible for 3-year-old kindergarten, children need to be turning 3 years old by April 30th of their 3-year-old kinder year. Children must attend a 3-year-old kindergarten for at least 5 hours per week to qualifying for funding in the year before 4-year-old kinder.

To be eligible for 4-year-old kindergarten, children need to be turning 4 years old by April 30th of their 4-year-old kinder year. Children must attend for at least 15 hours per week to qualify for funding in the year before school, so they must be enrolled for at least 2 days.

Families are welcome to decide which days they would like their child to attend kindergarten (pending availability).

In all kinder programs, the curriculum is designed and implemented by a university-trained Early Childhood Teacher. If the child is 3 or 4 years old but will not be deemed a 3 or 4-year-old kinder child until the following year, they will still access the kinder program. They will just benefit from additional kinder time. We move the recent 3 and 4-year-olds up to this room so they will be with children of a similar age group. The program is flexible and will cater for the range of ages and developmental levels of the children in the group. It is very common for children to spend two to three years in the kinder room.

Towards the end of the 4-year-old kindergarten year, Transition Learning and Development Statements are written for those children moving onto school. These reports are a great way to ease the transition to school, and bridges the gap between us and the primary schools. The ratio of 1 educator to 11 children is the same for a kindergarten in a child care setting as it is in a sessional kindergarten. Classroom sizes are similar and staffing arrangements are based on classroom size as well as any specific individual needs.

Even though the children are now in kindergarten, they are still exposed to all of the benefits of being in the childcare centre environment such as catered meals and the opportunity to mix with children of all ages.
